CLEonline.com, together with the Houston Bar Association, are pleased to present a special online CLE course in the area of business torts. This program provides an overview of the effects of a family law litigant's criminal case on custody and visitation. The presentation also includes information regarding protective orders. Lastly, this seminar outlines strategies for a family law attorney and a criminal law attorney to assist one another in representing a mutual client. This course features a video and downloadable MP3 audio presentation from a live CLE seminar by the Houston Bar Association (HBA) on December 12, 2014.

Subjects to be discussed during this course include:

  • Consequences of Family Violence

  • Advising Your Client

  • Tips for the Family Law Lawyer

  • Defending a Protective Order, Combining Forces

The speaker for this course is Mr. Matthew Skillern, an attorney with the firm of Midence & Skillern Law PLLC. As a Houston divorce lawyer and family law attorney, Matt Skillern has extensive experience negotiating and litigating family law cases and has handled many jury and non-jury trials involving property and child custody issues. Matt has been hired by other attorneys to provide assistance in complex family law disputes due to his expertise in resolving complicated property questions and in handling expert witnesses in property and custody cases. Because of his knowledge of legal procedure and evidence rules, he is also called upon to serve as co-counsel by family lawyers who seek to maximize their chance of success in cases they expect to be appealed to a higher court. Mr. Skillern has been selected as a Rising Star by the 'Texas Super Lawyers' Magazine for three years, most recently again in 2014. He is admitted to practice in all state courts in Texas and before the U.S. District Court for the Northern and Southern Districts of Texas. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Houston Bar Association and the Family Law Section Fort Bend County Bar Association. He received his law degree from South Texas College of Law(J.D., 2003) and his undergraduate degree from Baylor University (B.A. 2000). More information may be found on his firm's website.
