U.S. international trade is heavy. Though most lawyers will not routinely encounter customs law issues, those who may should know 1) the relevant agencies and processes; 2) basic concepts (e.g., origin, valuation, tariff classification, reasonable care, etc.); 3) sanctions (e.g., civil penalties, seizures, exclusions, criminal penalties, etc.); and 4) customs law in the news (i.e., topics that may come up at a party).
