The consensus is that autonomous vehicle (Avs) will reduce crashes and save lives, but there are numerous unanswered questions about legal liability, insurance coverage for crashes, and governmental regulation. Avs have already failed, and they will continue to fail. When Avs fail, who will get sued, and what causes of action will be alleged? Who will pay for injuries and damages caused by Avs? What role should the government play in the development of Avs? Autonomous vehicles are being Beta-tested on roadways across Texas and the nation, even though we know to a certainty that some people will be killed and injured who would not otherwise be killed and injured. The rationale is that such testing is necessary today to perfect Avs and to save lives in the future through a reduction of human error. But is the approach of trading lives today for lives in the future ethical? This CLE program features streaming video and downloadable audio presentations from a seminar by the Houston Bar Association (HBA) on November 17, 2023. Subjects include:

  • Overview and Analysis of AV Cases

  • NHTSA Levels of Vehicle Automation

  • Why AV Trucks?

  • January 2021: A New Cop on the Beat

  • Causes of Action / Federal Versus State Court?

  • Potential AV Defendants

  • AV Product Theories
